Apple is reportedly developing an innovative smart doorbell camera that utilizes Face ID for unlocking doors, as revealed by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg in today's edition of the Power On newsletter. The anticipated launch of the camera could happen by the end of 2025 at the earliest.

The doorbell's locking mechanism is designed to function similarly to an iPhone, unlocking automatically when you or a resident approaches it. To ensure secure facial recognition, the camera will incorporate Apple's Secure Enclave chip, which independently manages and stores Face ID data, keeping it isolated from the device's other hardware components.

Gurman anticipates that the device will probably be compatible with current third-party HomeKit smart locks. Additionally, there is a possibility that Apple will collaborate with a smart lock manufacturer to provide a comprehensive solution upon launch. The camera is also expected to leverage Apple's forthcoming "Proxima" hybrid Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, which is rumored to debut in new HomePod Mini and Apple TV models next year.

This upcoming doorbell camera is part of a larger initiative by Apple to enhance its smart home offerings, with a focus on Apple Intelligence. Other reported projects include a new smart home camera, a potential Apple-branded television, and new smart home displays—one resembling a simple iPad that can magnetically attach to wall mounts or speaker bases, and another on a robotic arm anchored to a bigger base.
