Company representatives explained that the compact size of single-board computers limits the number of built-in USB ports, so they had to balance port availability with size. While third-party hubs exist, the Raspberry Pi team found their quality and price unsatisfactory. This led their engineers to seek alternative solutions and ultimately design their own hub.
The official Raspberry Pi hub features four USB 3.0 Type-A ports for external devices and one USB-C port for power input. It also includes a built-in USB 3.0 cable for connecting the hub to the board. Raspberry Pi engineers developed the device in collaboration with Infineon.
