As Microsoft looks to transition its Windows 10 user base to the newly released Windows 11 24H2, the company has introduced banner ads promoting the upgrade directly on Windows 10 PCs. Microsoft representatives confirmed that these promotional banners allow users to start a seamless, free upgrade process with a single click. The initiative comes as part of Microsoft's broader strategy to phase out Windows 10 support, which is set to conclude on October 14, 2025.
The banners appear at a time when Windows 10 users face an approaching deadline. Post-2025, users wishing to continue receiving system updates will need to pay an annual fee of at least $30. Corporate clients, however, are eligible for Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, with annual support fees that increase from $61 to $244 over three years. Educational institutions benefit from a discounted ESU rate starting at $1 per year.
In early November, Microsoft highlighted various advantages of Windows 11, including improved speed, efficiency, and AI-powered tools, to encourage users to upgrade. Microsoft’s direct advertising method reflects its commitment to shifting users to Windows 11, offering them a smoother, enhanced operating experience with ongoing support.
