The song is up for Record of the Year alongside tracks by Beyoncé, Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, and Taylor Swift. Additionally, "Now and Then" is nominated for Best Rock Performance, competing against songs from Green Day, Pearl Jam, and The Black Keys.

Released in November 2023, "Now and Then" was restored from a demo recorded by John Lennon in the late 1970s. This recording, along with "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love," was shared with the other three band members in the 1990s, after Lennon's passing, and was intended to be part of The Beatles Anthology project.

However, "Now and Then" remained unreleased due to the limitations of the time, which couldn’t separate John’s vocals from the piano for a clean audio mix. In 2021, director Peter Jackson and his team of sound engineers achieved this with machine learning technology, enabling Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to finally complete the song.

Although "Now and Then" was restored with the help of AI, it complies with Grammy rules regarding artificial intelligence. Currently, these rules state that only human creators are eligible to be nominated and receive awards, but works with "AI elements" are permitted in relevant categories.
