In recent years, several startups have emerged to develop code assistance tools, leveraging large language models (LLMs) from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Their goal is to offer developers an enhanced coding experience and boost productivity.
Cursor is one of these AI-driven code editors, allowing developers to write code using a simple “Tab” command. With over 40,000 customers, including OpenAI, Cursor recently secured $60 million in Series A funding from investors like Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive Capital, and notable figures from Stripe, GitHub, Ramp, and OpenAI.
Supermaven, another emerging competitor to Copilot, is focused on delivering a faster, smarter, and more user-friendly alternative. Known for its “long-context” technology, Supermaven is currently used by over 40,000 developers. Recently, it raised $12 million from Bessemer Venture Partners, with backing from OpenAI co-founder John Schulman, Perplexity co-founder Denis Yarats, and Intercom founder Eoghan McCabe.
Now, Supermaven has joined forces with Cursor to accelerate product development. Cursor announced that an updated version of its “Tab” model is on the way, featuring advanced contextual awareness and support for long sequences of code modifications. While Supermaven’s plugins will remain supported, the team’s primary focus will shift to Cursor’s platform.
Meanwhile, GitHub Copilot has expanded its capabilities, now allowing users to choose from models provided by other companies. Available options include Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro, and OpenAI’s o1-preview and o1-mini models. Currently, OpenAI models are fully integrated, with Google’s AI models expected by late autumn and Anthropic’s Claude planned for year-end integration.
